Sawubona! Yebo!!

Sawubona is what Zulu people say to greet one another. If you´d translate it directly it would mean: "I see you" and the other person would reply saying: "Yebo!" meaning Yes! The story behind it is that there was quite some distance between the Zulu villages and they'd yell out "Sawubona" and wave while walking towards each other.
How to greet people in Zulu is one of the many things I have learned during my vacation with Pascal, Jinke and Inge. It was nice, I got to know a lot more of SA.
We flew from Cape Town to Durban and then started our roadtrip from that point.Well, I am not going to bore you with all the details but will tell you about the highlights :).
- I petted a cheetah at a cat farm
- I saw rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffalos, warthogs an elephant and lots of other cool animals when I went on a safari
- I saw wild hippos wandering around the street during the night in St. Lucia
- I got chased by a monkey. He thought I wanted to steal his avocados (which was actually quite tempting) :(
- I went to one of the world's prettiest lagoons, Sodwana bay <3
- I have visited a traditional Zulu village (probably the most impressive experience, culturally wise. The lady who guided us in the village taught us about the culture and traditions. Funny fact, like in the Chinese culture grooms have to pay the bride's parents too. For the Zulus it is a tradition to pay in cows. If you were to marry a girl who has no children (and is assumed to be a virgin) you will have to pay at least 11 cows. Some men can't afford these cows and will have to wait and save up in order to pay the in laws!
- I have slept in a beehive (traditional little African hut) in Swaziland. 3 days without my mobile phone and internet!
- I went down Africa's Highest slide at Ushaka Marine World (18 metres high).
- Durban is great, the warm Indian ocean, amazing food and cocktails! Dining on the 32nd floor of a revolving Italian restaurant.
- I went on a horse ride for the first time of my life in Drakensberg. It was a nice but exhausting experience since we booked a half day tour (4 hours). Which is quite long, especially when it starts raining!

Okay, so that was a very short summary of my vacation. I still have another 5 days off until school starts again :).

    Hi Angela,

Sounds great, those holiday highlights. We're trying hard here not to be jealous of you! Be careful, isn't petting cheetahs supposed to be rather dangerous?
    Enjoy, greetz,
    Jan
